Conditions before restoration:

• Canvas edges cutted

• Loss of tension

• Gaps of the original canvas, preparation and painted surface

• Sign of the wood stretcher bars along the edges

•Craquelure

• Alteration of the original varnish

  • X-ray Fluorescence, XRF - Identification of the Prussian Blue (a pigment first produced in the1704)

  • Microscopy analysis – Identification of the linen fiber

  • Consolidation from the back of the canvas through a consolidant solution and removal of the craquelure with Hot Table treatment

  • Consolidation of the canvas gaps through the conjunction of the thread “heads” and theapplication of a new canvas inlay with hot spatula   

  • Strip-lining and application of the painting on a new stretcher

  • Cleaning of the painted surface: several tests have been carried out through the creation of water solutions at different PH and  with organic solvents at different polarities. The surface has been cleaned with a Solvent Surfactant Gel.

  • Varnishing and filling of the gaps with stucco.

  • Pictorial retouching and final varnish.
